Retro brings emulation to Ascendara

Version 11.0.0 introduces Retro, a whole new built-in emulation experience with its own library, emulator support, save handling, Discord presence and Ascend cloud backups for retro saves. It is in public testing now, and so far it is holding up well.

Ascendara has always been built around PC games: an install directory, an executable, a save location and a set of tools around them. Retro changes that assumption. A ROM is not installed in the same way, one emulator can serve an entire library, and the save you care about may live somewhere completely different from the game itself. Version 11.0.0 is the first release that gives that difference its own place in Ascendara rather than trying to squeeze emulation into the existing library.

Retro is a library, not an emulator button

The new Retro section keeps ROMs and emulators in a dedicated library. Ascendara can launch a game through its configured emulator, track what is being played and expose proper Discord rich presence without making the user maintain a pile of shortcuts alongside the normal library. The point is not to replace the emulators themselves. Ascendara becomes the layer that knows which game belongs to which emulator and presents the collection consistently.

Keeping Retro separate also gives the feature room to grow without complicating normal PC game management. Emulator-specific settings, ROM locations and save behaviour can evolve on their own while the rest of Ascendara continues to treat installed PC games the way it already does.

The save file is part of the game

Save handling was one of the pieces that made Retro worth building as more than a launcher. Emulator saves are easy to overlook because their location depends on the emulator and configuration. Moving machines or reinstalling an emulator can leave the ROM intact while the actual progress disappears.

Retro makes that data explicit. For Ascend users, retro saves can also be included in cloud backups, giving an emulated game a recovery path similar to supported PC games. A long RPG save should not depend on remembering which emulator-specific directory happened to contain it.

11.0.0 also continues the recovery work

Retro is the headline, but the release also adds extraction recovery options to the core downloader. When extraction fails, Ascendara can present a recovery path instead of leaving a half-unpacked directory with no clear next action. That continues the work from Voyager, where retries, history and recovery became a much larger part of the app.

Why this is public testing first

Retro crosses several systems at once: library state, emulator configuration, launching, Discord presence, saves and cloud backup. It also has to deal with differences between emulators that cannot all be reproduced on one development setup. That is why 11.0.0 is on the public-testing branch before it becomes a normal stable release.

So far the feature has held up well enough to show publicly, but the testing period is there for a reason. The goal is not simply to get Retro into Ascendara; it is to make it feel like it belonged there from the beginning.

  • New Retro library with emulator support
  • Retro save handling and Discord presence
  • Ascend cloud backups for retro saves
  • Extraction recovery options in the downloader
